SEOUL — Prosecutor General Lee One-seok has pledged to honor the upcoming findings of an independent panel reviewing the high-profile investigation involving the first lady, Kim Keon Hee.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Lee expressed his commitment to the conclusions of the investigation review committee regarding the case surrounding a luxury handbag gifted to Kim Keon Hee by a Korean American pastor in 2022. This case was recently forwarded to the panel by the Seoul Central District Prosecutors Office, which decided earlier against pressing charges. Lee emphasized the need for a fair and thorough review to avoid "wasteful controversy" and ensure justice based on legal principles.

The committee, which is composed of external private experts, is tasked with providing impartial advice on cases of significant public interest. It operates independently and is set to commence its activities early next month. While its recommendations are not compulsory, they are highly regarded in guiding prosecutorial decisions. Lee, whose term concludes on September 15, hopes to resolve the case effectively within his tenure, in line with the committee’s history of careful deliberation.
