Kulim: Efforts to foster a culture of cleanliness and environmental sustainability in the Kulim industrial area have been strengthened through collaboration among industry players, local authorities and the community.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, this was carried out through the Sustainable Community Programme in Sungai Seluang today, organised by the Kulim Municipal Council (MPKK) in partnership with ATandS Malaysia, the MPKK chapter of the Association of Wives and Women Civil Servants (Puspanita), and the local community.
The programme featured various activities, including a community cleanup (gotong-royong), tree planting and the collection of recyclable materials. MPKK Puspanita chairperson Datin Azlina Md Zuki said the programme was not merely about cleaning up the area, but also served as a platform to bring together industry players, local authorities, women's organisations and the community in a collective effort to promote environmental sustainability.
'This programme may appear simple, involving communal work to clean the area, plant trees and collect recyclables, but its impact extends far beyond the activities carried out this morning. Programmes like this raise public awareness that environmental cleanliness and sustainability are shared responsibilities, rather than duties borne solely by the local authority,' she said when addressing the programme at Masjid Al-Muhtadin, Sungai Seluang, here.
Also present was MPKK president Datuk Elmi Yusoff. Azlina said the industrial sector's involvement was crucial given Kulim's rapid growth as an industrial hub, which required a collective commitment to ensure development progressed in tandem with environmental preservation. She said collaboration among MPKK, industry players and the local community also helped strengthen relationships and foster a shared sense of responsibility for the local environment.
'When all parties step into the community and get directly involved, we not only clean up the area but also strengthen ties among the community, local authority and industrial sector,' she said. She added that the tree-planting activity during the programme would provide long-term benefits to the local community by greening the area and improving environmental quality.
She expressed hope that such programmes could be held periodically in other areas of the Kulim district, with the participation of more companies, community organisations and residents. Meanwhile, Azlina commended ATandS Malaysia for its involvement in the programme, describing it as a reflection of the company's commitment to environmental conservation and the well-being of the local community.
She said the industrial sector played an important role in supporting sustainability initiatives through community activities, improved waste management practices and efforts to raise public awareness. The programme, themed 'Sowing Greenery, Reaping Sustainability', was attended by MPKK staff, ATandS Malaysia employees, Puspanita MPKK members and residents. Besides the community cleanup and tree-planting activities, participants also collected recyclable materials to promote waste segregation and reduce littering in the surrounding area.
