Manila: For soon-to-be-married couple Jon Mark Loyola and Anjelica Punongbayan, this year’s February 14 will mark the end of an era, as this will be their last Valentine’s Day as singles. As the countdown to their forever begins, these lovebirds-both products of past long-term relationships-reflect on what worked, what didn’t, and how love led them to each other.
According to Philippines News Agency, Anjelica, emerging from a six-year relationship, emphasized the importance of investing in oneself. “After a breakup, it is easy to wallow in grief and self-pity and constantly obsess about your shortcomings, all while thinking about the ‘what ifs,'” she shared. Studies suggest that romantic breakups can lead to emotional turmoil, even triggering severe trauma in young people. Experts advise allowing oneself to grieve while ensuring that one doesn’t remain in an emotional rut, and suggest seeking professional support when necessary. Anjelica attributes her healing journey to her faith and positive mindset, stating, “I just prayed fervently and put my trust in God’s perfect timing.”
Jon Mark highlighted the significance of creating a genuine connection. He recalled meeting Anjelica in 2022 and reconnecting in 2024, both having emerged from long-term relationships. He appreciated her wit and humor, saying, “I make her laugh hard, but she makes me laugh even harder.” He realized she was “the one” due to their aligned faith, goals, values, and sense of humor. Relationship experts indicate that couples who share values and backgrounds tend to thrive. Anjelica noted, “At 35, we both knew exactly what we were looking for in a relationship.”
The couple faced challenges with a long-distance relationship due to Jon Mark’s career as a seafarer. He emphasized the importance of communication and transparency, saying, “Being a seafarer comes with its own set of challenges.” Anjelica accepted his proposal in October 2024, attributing her decision to the emotional security he provided. She shared, “Transparency and honesty have been the foundation of our relationship.”
The couple also stressed the need to become ‘the one’ in a relationship. Anjelica stated, “To find ‘the one,’ you must become ‘the one.'” As they prepare for their wedding in July, they plan to build their family in the Philippines, in Cavite province. Reflecting on their relationship, Anjelica noted, “I’ve realized that love is about reciprocation. While communication and understanding are important, reciprocating love and effort strengthens a relationship even more.”
