Selangor: The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, has extended his congratulations to Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) for emerging overall champions in the 2026 Higher Education Institutions Sports Games (SUKIPT). As UPM Chancellor, His Royal Highness expressed great pride in the achievement and hoped that it would continue to inspire students to strive for excellence, not only academically but also in sports.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Sultan of Selangor believes that the success is the result of the hard work, discipline, and high fighting spirit of every student who took part in the Games, as well as the commitment and guidance of the coaches and lecturers involved. His Royal Highness also prays that UPM will continue to achieve success in all fields and at every level, while remaining one of Malaysia's top universities and gaining international recognition, as stated in a post on the Selangor Royal Office Instagram today.

The 7th edition of SUKIPT, which culminated at Dewan Tuanku Canselor, Universiti Malaya (UM) on September 6, saw the UPM contingent secure 35 gold, 20 silver, and 15 bronze medals, repeating their success as overall champions from the 2022 edition. Defending champions Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), who won the 2024 edition, finished second with 29 golds, 21 silvers, and 32 bronzes, while hosts UM finished third with a 28-18-17 medal haul.

A total of 46 meet records were broken throughout the Games: 13 in athletics, 18 in swimming, and 15 in archery. Two national records were also shattered, in the women's TK1 200-metre kayak event and the men's 10m air rifle event. HELP University runner Rodney James Darren James and Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) kayak specialist Syahida Asyiqin Rusli were named the 2026 SUKIPT Sportsman and Sportswoman respectively, following their outstanding performances throughout the Games.
