Seoul: The state arms procurement agency announced Tuesday its decision to prioritize the development of drone jammers for tanks as part of an accelerated weapons development program aimed at enhancing defenses against unmanned aerial vehicles.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) stated that the designated weapon system will undergo approximately two years of research and development. Following this period, it is expected to be deployed on a trial basis starting in 2028.

The jammers are engineered to enable tanks to autonomously eliminate drones by automatically detecting incoming enemy drones and disrupting their signals, as per DAPA's announcement. This initiative comes as the military intensifies its efforts to strengthen counter-drone capabilities in response to North Korea's advancements in drone technology, underscored by its recent testing of "suicide attack" drones last month.
