MANILA — The Philippine Senate has passed the Bacoor Assembly Act of 1898, which designates August 1 as a special working holiday to commemorate the historical significance of the sacrifices made for Philippine independence. This new holiday, named Araw ng Paglalathala at Pagtatanyag ng Kasarinlan ng Pilipinas, seeks to inspire Filipinos to appreciate and uphold the nation's freedom and democratic ideals.

According to Philippines News Agency, the author of Senate Bill No. 2690, this act not only marks a significant date but also serves as a tribute to the historical event that took place on August 1, 1898. During the Bacoor Assembly on this day, President Emilio Aguinaldo and 200 municipal leaders affirmed the country's independence through the Acta de Independencia, drafted by Apolinario Mabini. The senator emphasized that by recognizing this day, the Philippines honors the enduring legacy and sacrifices of those who fought for the nation's independence.

The bill, unanimously approved by the Senate, also mandates the National Commission for Culture and the Arts to promote the historical events related to the Bacoor Assembly of 1898. Furthermore, the Department of Education is tasked with developing and implementing educational programs and lesson plans to ensure that students understand and value the significance of this date.

Legarda highlighted the broader impact of commemorating August 1, stating, "Honoring August 1 also honors the importance of our history. It serves as an inspiration to all Filipinos to continue fighting for and to truly love our country."
