Sandakan: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) recorded 714 complaints regarding online content in Sandakan between 2025 and August this year, with more than half involving social media.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Sandakan Member of Parliament Vivian Wong Shir Yee stated that 408 of the complaints were related to social media platforms. She emphasized that these figures highlight the potential risks associated with online activities, affecting individuals across various demographics. Wong stressed the importance of not only focusing on internet access and technological advancements but also on equipping the public with the necessary knowledge and skills to navigate online risks effectively.

Wong's remarks were part of a speech delivered by Elopura Mukim Development Officer Jason Pang during the launch of the Safe Internet Campaign (KIS) Community Carnival in Sandakan. She underscored the necessity of extending the KIS initiative to the community level, ensuring that everyone benefits from digital development in a safe and responsible manner.

The campaign's efforts are bolstered by the participation of local 'Safe Internet Heroes' (WIS), who volunteer to advocate for internet safety within their communities. This localized approach aims to make internet safety messages more relatable and comprehensible for residents, as local volunteers are more attuned to the specific challenges faced by their communities.

Meanwhile, MCMC Corporate Communications reported that the KIS Carnival at Taman Harmoni successfully educated over 500 Sandakan residents on internet safety and digital skills. In addition to the WIS initiative, attendees engaged in interactive and hands-on robotics activities organized in partnership with Science Explore Sandakan.
