TAGUIG CITY — President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. encouraged Filipinos to "be heroes in their own right" during the National Heroes' Day commemoration at the Libingan ng mga Bayani. He emphasized the importance of upholding democracy, obeying the rule of law, and defending Philippine sovereignty in contemporary times, drawing inspiration from the nation's historical figures.

According to Philippines News Agency, the President highlighted the sacrifices of past heroes such as Lapulapu, Dr. Jose Rizal, and Gabriela Silang, among others, who resisted colonial forces to protect the nation's independence and dignity. Marcos praised these figures for their roles in securing the freedoms enjoyed in the Philippines today and acknowledged the sacrifices they made, including their peace, rights, and lives.

In his speech, Marcos also recognized modern-day heroes, including members of the Navy and Coast Guard, overseas Filipino workers, and educators, who contribute daily to the nation's well-being. He called on citizens to continue the legacy of their ancestors by nurturing patriotism and a love for the country among younger generations.

National Heroes Day, observed every last Monday of August, commemorates the Cry of Pugad Lawin, which marked the start of the 1896 Philippine Revolution against Spanish rule. The President led a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and interacted with Filipino veterans, emphasizing the ongoing relevance of their legacy in today’s society.

Meanwhile, the National Security Council recognized all who have fought for the country's current freedoms, noting their "unwavering dedication" as a testament to the Filipino spirit. They encouraged the public to draw inspiration from these legacies to build a more secure future for the Philippines.

In parallel, House Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez commended the quieter acts of heroism by everyday Filipinos, from teachers to fishermen, emphasizing that heroism manifests not only in grand gestures but also in daily acts of service and kindness. He encouraged recognition of these unsung heroes who significantly contribute to national and global betterment.
