SEOUL — A series of significant events in South Korean history, spanning from pivotal military operations during the Korean War to diplomatic and economic developments, are commemorated today, underscoring their lasting impact on the nation's trajectory.

According to Yonhap News Agency, on this day in 1950, U.N. forces, under the command of U.S. Gen. Douglas MacArthur, initiated an amphibious landing at Incheon. This strategic move, executed three months after the onset of the Korean War, played a crucial role in pushing back North Korean forces and reclaiming Seoul by September 26 of that year. In another historical event on September 15, 1963, Samyang Foods Co. introduced Samyang Ramyeon, marking the launch of South Korea's first ramyeon product.

Further, on this date in 1974, North Korea became a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency, only to withdraw in 2003 due to disputes with the United States over its nuclear program. In 2002, the militaries of South and North Korea agreed to establish a hotline to facilitate the reconnection of railways and roads, though these routes remain closed to traffic because of ongoing political and military tensions.
