Kuala lumpur: The Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) provides avenues and opportunities for graduates with disabilities, including those with autism, to enter the workforce, including the public service, after completing their studies at the Youth and Sports Skills Training Institutes (ILKBS). Its Minister, Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari, said the ministry maintained data on ILKBS graduates and alumni each year to track their career paths, with most securing opportunities in the industry, as well as in the private and public sectors.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dr Mohammed Taufiq highlighted the ministry's goal of ensuring that at least one per cent of persons with disabilities are employed in public service roles. At Menara KBS, opportunities are already being provided for these individuals to operate a cafe and offer services, showcasing an example of the ministry's efforts in action. The statement was made after the 21st ILKBS Convocation Ceremony 2026.
This year, 4,155 graduates received their certificates from ILKBS, including 130 youths with disabilities and autism. Dr Mohammed Taufiq noted that 20 per cent of ILKBS's curriculum focuses on character development and identity, while the remaining 80 per cent is dedicated to skills training. This approach includes graduates' participation in community programmes, which serves as a method of giving back to society.
The minister also expressed support for the implementation of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) 2.0, affirming the ministry's commitment to empowering youth and sports skills training institutions through collaborations with industry players. So far, 180 memoranda of understanding have been signed to bolster cooperation in TVET, particularly in high-demand sectors like automotive and electrical.
Dr Mohammed Taufiq encouraged ILKBS graduates to consider job opportunities not only within the country but also in international markets, including the ASEAN region. He emphasized the importance of keeping up with technological advancements such as artificial intelligence and digital technology, urging graduates to strive for job creation alongside seeking employment. Currently, ILKBS boasts a graduate employability rate of 97 per cent.
Meanwhile, Muhammad Haffiz Rahim, who received the ILKBS Overall Best Graduate Award, described the recognition as a significant milestone. The 25-year-old, who completed a Diploma in Automotive Maintenance Engineering Technology at the National Youth Advanced Skills Institute (IKTBN) Temerloh, aspires to work in the public sector, specifically with KBS. His success through the TVET pathway has inspired him to encourage relatives to pursue similar opportunities for promising employment prospects.
TVET is recognized as a promising field with a bright future for job opportunities. Muhammad Haffiz expressed hopes to work with KBS in organizing events like National Sports Day and National Youth Day, aiming to contribute to the community and repay his parents for their sacrifices.
