Makati City: The Japanese-supplied surveillance radar to the Philippines is providing an important contribution to Philippine air defense, Japan Defense Minister Gen Nakatani said on Monday. Nakatani held a bilateral meeting with Department of National Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. at Makati Shangri-La Hotel.

According to Philippines News Agency, Nakatani evaluated the effectiveness of the Japanese radar systems during his visit to Philippine military installations, including Basa Air Base in Floridablanca, Pampanga, and Wallace Air Station in San Fernando City, La Union. At Wallace Air Station, a Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (MELCO) FPS-3ME fixed radar system is operational, showcasing the role these radars play in regional security.

During a media briefing, Nakatani expressed his appreciation for the role of the Philippines in regional stability, particularly in the South China Sea. He highlighted the significant contribution of Japanese air surveillance radar systems to the country’s air defense and regional peace. However, details regarding these contributions were not disclosed due to the confidential nature of radar operations and security considerations.

The MELCO FPS-3ME radar system was commissioned in December 2023, with two additional radar systems expected to be delivered soon. Additionally, a mobile MELCO TPS-P14ME radar system was delivered and commissioned in April 2024. The total contract for this equipment is valued at PHP5.5 billion.
