Indonesia to Deport 26 Filipino Crew Members for Illegal Fishing

Biak: The Biak Numfor Immigration Office in Papua is set to deport 26 crew members of two Filipino fishing vessels who were arrested for illegal fishing activities in Indonesian waters on May 9, a government official announced on Saturday.

According to Philippines News Agency, Papua Immigration and Correctional Services head, Directorate General Samuel Toba, stated that the Filipino nationals would be deported on June 17 through Frans Kaisiepo Airport in Biak due to the lack of proper documentation. The announcement was made during a press briefing with Biak Numfor Immigration Office head, Jose Rizal.

Toba expressed hope that the deportation process of the crew members from the FB Twin J-04 and YB Yanreyd-293 vessels could be expedited. This would help alleviate the stress and anxiety of the deportees, who have been in Biak since their capture on May 9, while they undergo legal proceedings.

To ensure a smooth deportation process, the Indonesian authorities have coordinated with the Philippine Embassy in Jakarta and the Philippine Consulate in Manado, North Sulawesi. These institutions are assisting in providing the necessary travel documents for the deportees in lieu of passports, Toba added.
