Dumaguete: Over 500 human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) cases have been recorded and are monitored by the Provincial Health Office (PHO) in Negros Oriental, an official said Thursday. Dr. Liland Estacion, PHO chief, stated that people living with HIV (PLWH) in the province visit the treatment hub regularly for medication and other services.
According to Philippines News Agency, these cases have been documented since 2017. Dr. Estacion revealed that as of June 9, 2025, a total of 636 HIV cases have been diagnosed, with 530 individuals consistently returning to the treatment hub for follow-up. Of these cases, 90 percent are males, totaling 508, while the remaining 28 are females. The youngest patients include three children under the age of 15.
Records from the PHO indicate that 59 patients fall within the 15-24 age bracket, 263 individuals are aged between 25-34, 170 are within the 35-54 age bracket, and the remainder are over 55 years old. Dr. Estacion identified common transmission modes of HIV, including unprotected sex, mother-to-child transmission, and sharing of syringes.
In light of these findings, the PHO chief urged the public to undergo testing if they suspect they might have contracted the disease. She assured that all services are free and emphasized the confidentiality of the identities of PLWHs.
During a recent meeting with Governor Manuel Sagarbarria, Dr. Estacion discussed the potential establishment of a drive-through HIV testing facility, highlighting ongoing efforts to enhance accessibility and encourage testing among the community.
