Germany’s President To Embark On Strategic Asia Tour

Berlin: German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier is set to embark on a five-day tour across Asia, visiting Indonesia, the Philippines, and Uzbekistan. Steinmeier's journey, commencing on Sunday, highlights Germany's intent to strengthen ties in the region, as revealed by the presidential office through the German news agency dpa.According to Nam News Network, Steinmeier will be accompanied by his wife Elke Bdenbender and a delegation of business leaders. Indonesia, recognized as Southeast Asia's largest democracy and the world's largest Muslim-majority nation with over 280 million citizens, is the first stop. Governed since 2024 by President Prabowo Subianto, a former general and defense minister, the visit to Jakarta will emphasize the peaceful coexistence of diverse religious communities.In Manila, the capital of the Philippines, Steinmeier is scheduled to visit a Lufthansa production facility and meet with Maria Ressa, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate. With a population of 117 million, the Philippines is a mong Southeast Asia's most populous nations. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr, in office since 2022 and son of former ruler Ferdinand Marcos, leads a government focused on investment, economic growth, and enhancing US relations amid South China Sea tensions.The tour's final destination is Tashkent, Uzbekistan, where Steinmeier will engage with the local branch of German construction firm GP Gnter Papenburg. The visit will spotlight skilled labor migration, as many young Uzbeks seek work in Russia or Turkey. Additionally, Uzbekistan hosts the highest number of German-language learners in Asia, as noted by the presidential office.
