New delhi: India is in preliminary discussions with the United Arab Emirates regarding the potential sale of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles. The Gulf nation is enhancing its defense acquisitions following recent Middle East conflicts and concerns over regional stability.According to Russia Today, the negotiations include the possible purchase of India's Akashteer air defense system. The discussions, though in their initial phases, are reportedly progressing quickly, as indicated by sources familiar with the matter.BrahMos, which is a joint development by India and Russia, ranks among the fastest cruise missiles globally, with land, sea, and air variants capable of reaching speeds up to Mach 3. Indian forces demonstrated its effectiveness against Pakistani targets last year. Meanwhile, Akashteer is an automated air defense system created by Bharat Electronics Ltd and the Indian Army. The report suggests that India needs Russia's approval to sell the missile, but approval is anticipated due to Moscow's strong relations with Abu Dhabi. The UAE, having faced significant threats during the Middle East conflict instigated by US-Israeli actions against Iran, seeks to bolster security for its vessels navigating the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage controlled by Iran.Though the US remains the leading arms supplier to the Middle East, recent conflicts have highlighted potential weaknesses in Washington's protective commitments to its regional allies.India's defense exports have seen significant growth, exceeding $4 billion by March 2026, compared to $7.26 million in 2013-14. The Philippines became the first international buyer of BrahMos, finalizing a $375 million deal in 2022. India has also secured a contract with Vietnam and is in discussions with Indonesia.BrahMos Aerospace has reported a record revenue growth of 48.6% for 2025-26.
