Geneva: Second Vice Foreign Minister Kang In-sun will travel to Geneva next week to attend the high-level U.N. sessions on human rights and disarmament, Seoul's foreign ministry said Thursday. Kang's participation in these sessions underscores South Korea's ongoing commitment to global human rights and disarmament efforts.

According to Yonhap News Agency, Kang will be present at the 58th U.N. Human Rights Council (UNHRC) High-Level Segment on Tuesday. During this event, she intends to emphasize South Korea's dedication to advancing U.N. initiatives to promote human rights, particularly as a UNHRC member for the 2025-27 term, as stated by ministry spokesperson Lee Jae-woong in a press briefing.

Lee further mentioned that there will be a focus on the connection between North Korea's human rights issues and broader international peace and security. Kang will call for sustained international attention to these concerns.

In addition to the human rights council, from Monday through Wednesday, Kang will participate in the U.N. Conference on Disarmament, which is also being held in Geneva. Her presence there will be to present South Korea's efforts to enhance the global disarmament and nonproliferation framework. Lee stated that they will urge for unified international responses to North Korea's unlawful activities, including its nuclear and missile programs.

Kang is scheduled to deliver keynote speeches at both of these significant sessions. During her time in Geneva, she also plans to engage with key officials from related U.N. bodies, such as Filippo Grandi, the commissioner of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, and Nada al-Nashif, the U.N. deputy high commissioner for human rights, according to the ministry.
