Phnom penh: Cambodian Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Prak Sokhonn emphasized the critical role of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) as a platform for regional peace and stability. He noted that ASEAN is guided by its Charter and the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC).

According to Nam News Network, Sokhonn highlighted ASEAN's transformation over nearly six decades from a region marked by division and uncertainty to one characterized by dialogue, cooperation, and shared prosperity. He made these remarks in an official message commemorating ASEAN's 59th anniversary.

Sokhonn pointed out that the current global climate is far more volatile, with increasing armed conflicts, geopolitical tensions, and challenges to international law and multilateralism. In such an environment, he stressed the need for ASEAN to be proactive in shaping change, rather than just responding to it. He underscored the importance of ASEAN's unity and centrality in navigating modern geopolitical challenges.

As a deputy prime minister, Sokhonn expressed pride in Cambodia's contributions to the region since it joined ASEAN in 1999. He reaffirmed Cambodia's commitment to strengthening ASEAN's unity, resilience, and global relevance, while adhering to the ASEAN Charter and the TAC.

ASEAN was founded on August 8, 1967, and currently includes Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and Timor-Leste.
