Manila: PNP chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III has challenged Davao City Acting Mayor Sebastian "Baste" Duterte to a charity boxing match. The challenge was issued during a press briefing at Camp Crame, with Torre announcing that the proceeds from the match would support relief efforts for those affected by recent flooding in Metro Manila and other areas due to the southwest monsoon and tropical cyclones.
According to Philippines News Agency, Duterte had previously challenged Torre to a fistfight. In response, Torre suggested channeling this challenge into a charity boxing event, proposing a 12-round match to take place on July 27 at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City. Torre hopes to secure sponsors for each round, with the funds directed to those impacted by the adverse weather conditions.
Torre emphasized the ease of setting up a boxing match compared to other events and expressed his willingness to hold the match at any available venue with a boxing ring, should the Araneta Coliseum be unavailable. He noted the importance of using this opportunity to raise funds for those affected by the typhoon and flooding.
The tension between Torre and Duterte stems from a history of disagreements, including Torre's involvement in the arrest of Duterte's father, former president Rodrigo Duterte, during his tenure as chief of the PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group. Despite this, Torre clarified that his intention in accepting the challenge is solely to generate funds for charitable purposes.
Torre is preparing for the match by hitting the gym for a quick workout and is open to broadcasting the event on social media, encouraging viewers to donate to storm victims. He reiterated his commitment to donating his share of the proceeds to charity, aiming to aid those affected by the recent weather disturbances.
