Beirut: The UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon reported the death of two of its personnel in the country's south, marking the second fatal incident in just 24 hours amidst Israel's ongoing ground invasion. The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) stated that the two Indonesian peacekeepers lost their lives when an explosion of unknown origin destroyed their vehicle. UNIFIL has initiated an investigation into these incidents, while UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix has condemned the attacks, urging for a cessation of all acts that endanger peacekeepers.Lebanese President Joseph Aoun denounced the targeting of peacekeeping forces and has engaged in international discussions to advocate for negotiations. UN Special Co ordinator for Lebanon Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert has called for an immediate truce to halt the ongoing devastation.In response to these events, France's Foreign Minister has demanded an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council, referring to the incidents as serious. Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto expressed serious concern, emphasizing that assaults on United Nations contingents are intolerable and unacceptable. He highlighted the essential role of UN forces in maintaining peace, preventing escalation, and protecting civilians, warning that attacks on them constitute an assault on the international community. Switzerland's Foreign Ministry also voiced its concern and reiterated its support for UNIFIL.
