PBBM to Study Carefully Proposed BSKE Reset, Execs’ Term Extension

Manila: The proposal to reset the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections (BSKE) and extend the terms for all village and youth officials needs to be carefully studied, Malaca±ang said on Thursday. In a Palace press briefing, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro stated that President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has yet to receive the enrolled bill on the postponement of the 2025 BSKE and extension of officials' terms.

According to Philippines News Agency, Castro explained, "Kapag po natanggap na po, pag-aaralan po iyang mabuti para po mapirmahan kung dapat mapirmahan, aayunan kung dapat sang-ayunan (Once received, it will be studied carefully so that it can be signed if it should be signed, approved if it should be approved)." The bill, which has been approved by both the House of Representatives and the Senate, proposes to move the holding of the BSKE to the first Monday of November 2026 and every four years thereafter, contingent upon the President's approval.

The measure also aims to extend the officials' term of office from three years to four years. Under the bill, village officials may hold the same position for up to three consecutive terms, while youth officials are limited to one term in the same role.

Commission on Elections chairperson George Garcia commented that preparations for the 2025 BSKE are ongoing, despite the bill still awaiting the President's signature.
