Comelec Prepares for NBI Investigation Amid Cybercrime Allegations

Manila: Commission on Elections (Comelec) chairperson George Garcia on Thursday stated that he and other officials are prepared to address the complaint lodged against them by a multi-sectoral group before the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).

According to Philippines News Agency, the group, which includes bishops, retired generals, and civil society leaders, has accused Comelec of illegal activities related to the May 12 midterm elections and has requested the NBI Anti-Fraud Division to investigate. Garcia expressed confidence in the NBI's ability to conduct an objective and fair investigation, as expected by the Filipino public.

Garcia emphasized that the allegations are not new and have been addressed repeatedly. He asserted that the conclusions of a fair, honest, peaceful, and credible May 12 election were supported by local and international election stakeholders, including the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting, European Union, Asian Network for Free Elections, and various election management bodies and organizations.

Despite the charges of system interference under Republic Act 10175, known as the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012, Garcia remains steadfast in his commitment to transparency and truth. He acknowledged the importance of diverse opinions in a healthy democracy but maintained that the evidence supports the integrity of the elections. The NBI holds the primary jurisdiction for investigating crimes under RA 10175.
