Manila: Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairperson George Garcia announced that the resumption of voter registration from August 1 to 10 is exclusively for first-time voters and those who have been deactivated, allowing them to participate in the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) scheduled for late this year.
According to Philippines News Agency, Garcia emphasized that the short duration of the registration period could hinder the processing of applications by the Election Registration Board (ERB). He stated that applications might not be approved in time, and those seeking to transfer their registration would not be accommodated during the August enlistment. ERB hearings are crucial for approving or disapproving voter registration applications and removing voters due to reasons such as death or failure to vote in two consecutive regular elections.
Garcia reiterated Comelec's earlier estimate of enrolling one million new voters within the 11-day period, with registration activities taking place nationwide. He expressed hope that individuals who have not yet voted would seize this opportunity to register or reactivate their voter status. The BSKE is slated for December 1.
