Manila: The Philippines and Palau have taken significant steps to enhance their bilateral relations by signing three new agreements, focusing on fisheries cooperation and policy consultations. The signing ceremony was attended by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and visiting Palau President Surangel Whipps Jr. at Malaca±ang.

According to Philippines News Agency, a memorandum of understanding on Policy Consultations was signed between the foreign ministries of the two countries. This agreement establishes a mechanism for exchanging views on bilateral and regional cooperation, as well as on international issues of mutual interest. Additionally, a diplomatic note was signed to facilitate a study visit by Palauan officials and stakeholders to agriculture and fisheries facilities in the Philippines. This visit aims to provide experiential learning through engagements with Philippine training institutions, hatcheries, research facilities, and local markets.

Furthermore, an MOU on fisheries cooperation was established between the Department of Agriculture, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources of the Philippines, and the Ministries of Fisheries and the Environment of Palau. The agreement is designed to promote sustainable development through fisheries conservation, fishing ventures, joint research activities, and the prevention of illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing.

President Marcos expressed optimism about finalizing a labor cooperation agreement with Palau within the year. This labor pact is intended to protect and promote the welfare of Filipino workers in Palau. Additionally, there is an aim to conclude a social security agreement, ensuring access to social benefits for Filipinos working in Palau. Discussions also included formal cooperation in health and the promotion of human resources development.

Marcos highlighted the historical ties and cultural affinity between the two nations, which date back to the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1997. He emphasized the shared commitment to bolstering bilateral relations and working with Pacific nations to advance disaster resilience efforts in the region. The two leaders also agreed to continue dialogue on maritime boundary delimitation.

The Filipino community in Palau numbers around 4,000, and both countries are looking forward to celebrating the 30th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2027.
