Mati Airport Receives PHP700 Million Boost for Development

Mati: The Mati Airport development project has received an additional PHP700 million for its runway and site development, a lawmaker announced Monday. Davao Oriental 2nd District Representative Cheeno Miguel Almario disclosed the allocation details during a press briefing, highlighting that PHP300 million will be directed towards runway development, while PHP400 million will be used for site development.

According to Philippines News Agency, Rep. Almario emphasized that the rehabilitation marks the initial phase in transforming the facility into an international airport. He noted that upgrading the terminal to meet international standards would necessitate further funding beyond the current allocation. The recent financial boost stems from the 2025 General Appropriations Act, which Almario managed to secure through persistent lobbying efforts, with significant support from Senator JV Ejercito.

This recent funding supplements a previous PHP200 million allocation granted in 2019 and an additional PHP90 million contribution earmarked for runway extension. Last year, Almario sought PHP300 million for the project; however, only PHP100 million was approved at that time. Davao Oriental 1st District Representative Nelson Dayanghirang added that the airport's development is expected to stimulate job creation, economic growth, and tourism in the region. A groundbreaking ceremony to commence the enhancements was held on February 10.

Mati Airport, initially constructed in 1976 and originally named Imelda R. Marcos Airport, has faced underutilization for decades. The recent funding and planned upgrades aim to revitalize the facility and enhance its operational capabilities.
