Malaysia Reports 3,856 New COVID-19 Infections, Nine More Deaths

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 24 (NNN-BERNAMA) – Malaysia reported 3,856 new COVID-19 infections as of midnight, bringing the national total to 2,832,945, according to the health ministry.

Of the new infections, there are 492 imported cases and 3,364 local transmissions, data released on the ministry’s website showed.

A further nine deaths have been reported, bringing the death toll to 31,892.

The ministry reported 2,814 new recoveries, bringing the total number of cured and discharged to 2,755,933.

There are 45,120 active cases, 143 are being held in intensive care and 53 of those are in need of assisted breathing.

The country reported 131,168 vaccine doses administered yesterday alone, and 79.8 percent of the population have received at least one dose, 78.7 percent are fully vaccinated and 32.8 percent have received boosters.

S. Korea Reports 7,513 More Covid-19 Cases

SEOUL, Jan 24 (NNN-YONHAP) – South Korea reported 7,513 more cases of COVID-19, as of midnight, compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 741,413.

 

The daily caseload stayed above 7,000 for the third consecutive day, amid the spread of the Omicron variant, which the health authorities said became a dominant strain here.

 

The recent resurgence was attributable to small cluster infections in the Seoul metropolitan area.

 

Of the new cases, 1,626 were Seoul residents. The number of newly infected people living in Gyeonggi province and the western port city of Incheon was 2,391 and 552, respectively.

 

The virus also raged in non-metropolitan region. The number of new infections in the non-capital areas was 2,590, or 36.2 percent of the total local transmission.

 

Among the new cases, 354 were imported from overseas, lifting the total to 23,753.

 

The number of infected people who were in a serious condition stood at 418, down 13 from the previous day.

 

Twenty-five more deaths were confirmed, bringing the death toll to 6,565. The total fatality rate was 0.89 percent.

 

The country administered vaccines to 44,569,299 people, or 86.9 percent of the total population, and the number of fully inoculated people was 43,803,685, or 85.4 percent of the population.

 

The number of those who received booster jabs was 25,245,905, or 49.2 percent of the population.

Indonesia’s Strong Quake Injures One, Causes Property Damage

JAKARTA– One person was injured after a 6.1-magnitude earthquake rocked Indonesia’s North Sulawesi province yesterday, according to official sources.

 

The earthquake also damaged a church and several houses, the country’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said, adding that, no deaths were reported and the tremors did not potentially trigger giant waves of tsunami.

 

The quake jolted at 9:26 a.m. (0226 GMT), with the epicentre at 39 km south-east of Melonguane town, in Talaud district, and the depth at 12 km under the seabed, the agency said.

 

The intensity of the quake was felt at III and IV on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale in the town, according to the agency.

 

“This quake is classified as a shallow quake, as a result of deformation of Molucca-sea plate. The earthquake originated from an oblique thrust fault,” said Daryono, the agency’s head of the quake and tsunami mitigation division.

 

He said, there were nine weak aftershocks following the main quake, and advised the communities to avoid cracked or damaged buildings.

 

Head of the Disaster Management and Mitigation Agency of Talaud District, Jabes Linda, told the media that, the tremors were strongly felt in the district and some damage was caused in the Kabaruan sub-district.

Singapore Reports 2,463 New COVID-19 Cases

SINGAPORE– Singapore reported 2,463 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 yesterday, bringing the total tally to 310,276.

 

Of the new cases, 873 were detected through PCR (polymerase chain reaction) tests, and 1,590 through ART (antigen rapid test) tests, according to the statistics released by the Ministry of Health.

 

Among the PCR cases, 636 were local transmissions and 237 were imported cases. Among the ART cases with mild symptoms and assessed to be of low risk, 1,582 were local transmissions and eight imported cases, respectively.

 

A total of 401 cases are currently warded in hospitals, with 11 cases in the intensive care units.

 

One death was reported from COVID-19 yesterday, bringing the total death toll to 847, the ministry said.

KUALA LUMPUR– Malaysia reported 4,116 new COVID-19 cases as of midnight, bringing the national total of infections to 2,829,089, according to the health ministry.

 

There are 498 new imported cases and 3,618 cases are local transmissions, data released on the ministry’s website showed.

 

A further 14 deaths have been reported, bringing the death toll to 31,882.

 

The ministry reported 2,858 new recoveries, bringing the total number of cured and discharged to 2,753,119.

 

There are 44,088 active cases, 141 are being held in intensive care and 62 of those are in need of assisted breathing.

 

The country reported 154,906 vaccine doses administered yesterday alone, and 79.8 percent of the population have received at least one dose, 78.7 percent are fully vaccinated and 32.3 percent have received boosters.

Brunei Reports 36 New COVID-19 Cases, 16,022 In Total

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Brunei reported 36 new cases of COVID-19 yesterday, bringing the total tally of infections to 16,022.

According to Brunei’s Ministry of Health, the newly recorded cases included 20 local infections and 16 import cases.

As of Jan 19, 94.7 percent of Brunei’s population have been administered with at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccines, while 93.8 percent have completed two doses, and 35.3 percent have received three doses.

A total of 370 active cases are still being treated and monitored in the country, and 102 patients have died.
