The diversity and quality of the submissions is overwhelming, which was also enthusiastically confirmed by Maneka Gandhi, former Indian Minister of Environment and Chairperson of the international Energy Globe Jury.

This world’s most important environmental prize is awarded in the categories of Life: Earth, Fire, Water, Air and Youth category.

The awards are presented in all participating countries and as the highlight of the year at the Energy Globe World Award. Due to the global pandemic, the Energy Globe World Award will be presented globally as a pre-produced documentation on November 8 at 13:00 o’clock Glasgow local time in the context of the Climate Summit COP26 and at www.energyglobe.info. High-ranking personalities, like Nobel and BluePlanet winner Professor Mohan Munasinghe, place themselves at the service of our earth.

Among the nominees are projects from all five continents, each with solutions to the very different problems in the regions. For example, the submissions in the fire category are forward-looking, demonstrating completely new ways of storing and producing ecological energy. Presentation films of all nominated projects in the five categories are at https://www.energyglobe.info/video-finalists.

From November 8, all national Energy Globe winners of 2021 will be online at www.energyglobe.info. The mission of the Energy Globe is to show that there are already solutions for every environmental problem in our world, implemented by environmentally conscious people who act innovatively instead of just talking about it. And in a co-operation of consumers, economy and politics, future generations will find a liveable earth.

International Association of Political Consultants Awards 2021 Democracy Medal to Russian Opposition Leader Alexei Navalny

WASHINGTON, Nov. 05, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Russian Opposition Leader Alexei Navalny has been announced as the winner of the prestigious 2021 Democracy Medal awarded by members of the International Association of Political Consultants (IAPC) which is the global peak professional body for democratic election strategists and pollsters.

IAPC president Mauricio De Vengoechea said Mr. Navalny’s award recognized him for fighting for democracy in Russia, often at great personal risk to his own life.

“Mr. Navalny has long been the most prominent voice calling attention to democratic abuses and corruption under the regime,” Mr. De Vengoechea said.

“His bravery has come at a high cost to him, including an attempt to poison him with a nerve agent and periods in jail. He remains imprisoned in Russia at this time following the latest in a series of impeding legal maneuvers against him by officials.”

“Since becoming leader of the Russia of the Future Party in 2013, Mr. Navalny has been subjected to a range of tactics to prevent him from participating in election processes. Instead, he has sought to engage Russian citizens through social media activism that has attracted many followers.”

“As a non-partisan organization that defends and celebrates free elections, IAPC believes Mr. Navalny, like all those who seek high office, should be able to put his case to voters in a free and fair election. The simple act of choosing your candidate is a foundational privilege of democracy. It should be defended and never taken for granted.”

“The challenges to democratic principle and human liberty that we see in Mr. Navalny’s case are disturbing. By presenting this award to him, IAPC is articulating its support for the principle that all people everywhere have a right to free elections.”

IAPC is the global professional organization for people who work in democratic election campaigns and processes, often for head of states races across Europe, the Americas, the Asia-Pacific and Africa. It provides a forum for campaign strategists and pollsters to share and deepen professional knowledge around elections and to monitor trends in election practice globally.

Since 1982, IAPC has been a pioneer in awarding an organization or an individual who in the judgment of its membership has worked courageously to foster, promote and sustain the democratic process anywhere in the world through our Democracy Medal, the first international award of its kind.

This is the 39th time since 1982 that the Medal has been awarded. Nominees are proposed by members who then vote on the nominee shortlist. Awardees have included individual politicians and leaders, political organizations, and political movements that have contributed to free elections through their leadership and commitment to democratic ideals.

Other 2021 nominees shortlisted for the Medal were Tsai Ing-wen, President of the Republic of China (Taiwan) for asserting only Taiwan’s people can decide their future; journalist Maria Ressa, for breathtaking courage in challenging the Duterte government in the Philippines; and German Chancellor Angela Merkel for being an island of sanity in a growing sea of demagogue leaders.

Past winners include Hong Kong Umbrella Movement founder Joshua Wong, the Women of Belarus, Venezuelan opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez, Polish Solidarity leader Lech Walesa, US Presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton, Philippines President Corazon Aquino, Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, Zimbabwean Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, and the Committee to Protect Journalists.

Established in 1968, The International Association of Political Consultants is committed to fostering democracy and the democratic process throughout the world. Members span a variety of political backgrounds and activities fostering the growing and diverse profession of political consulting as well as the practical aspects of democratic elections.

Speech by President Halimah Yacob at the Singapore Red Cross Awards Ceremony

Mr Seah Kian Peng, Group CEO, FairPrice Group and Member of Parliament for Marine Parade GRC

Mr Tan Kai Hoe, Chairman of the Singapore Red Cross

Distinguished Guests

Ladies and Gentlemen

Good afternoon. I am glad to join you at today’s Awards Ceremony to honour the individuals and organisations who have selflessly supported the Singapore Red Cross’ humanitarian mission.

The COVID-19 pandemic has tested our mettle, but it has also brought out the best in us. It has highlighted our people’s adaptability, resilience, kindness and generosity. I know I am in the company of many who are rallying together to care for the vulnerable groups in our society, helping them navigate the new normal, and ensuring that no one is left behind. Thank you for helping to make Singapore stronger and more resilient.

I applaud the Singapore Red Cross team for pressing on despite the challenges posed by the pandemic. You continue to fulfil critical roles including serving as medical chaperones and community befrienders to the elderly and persons with disabilities, champions for low-income families, and mentors to the children and youth of these families. Some of you are also blood donor recruiters and help ensure the robustness of our blood stocks.

I am heartened to learn that during the pandemic, the Red Cross Youth initiated numerous community projects. Red Cross Youth from tertiary institutions showed appreciation to frontline workers, while the Red Cross Youth in primary and secondary schools rolled out a Bingo Challenge to rally acts of care in their homes, schools and the community. Even Red Cross Juniors in pre-schools played a part, making colourful greeting cards with messages of encouragement for the elderly and low-income families. These efforts will go a long way in making our society more caring.

The Singapore Red Cross’ enduring efforts in inculcating important life values in our young humanitarians is remarkable. It has produced community leaders like Mr Laurence Goh and Ms Terene Seow, both of whom started their journey as Red Cross Youth in schools and are receiving the Outstanding Service Award today. I understand that a number of other volunteers who will receive Awards today also started out as Red Cross Youth. Congratulations to all of you!

Beyond our shores, the Singapore Red Cross coordinated a commendable international COVID-19 response that involved the provision of $8.5 million worth of health equipment for 28 countries, including China and India. Navigating supply shortages, logistics and freight challenges, Singapore Red Cross’ partners, volunteers and employees rallied together in solidarity to show our commitment towards the global effort against the COVID-19 pandemic.

In times of crisis, we need to draw strength from one another. For more than 70 years, the Singapore Red Cross has mobilised the power of humanity and catalysed volunteerism, philanthropy and partnerships to enhance resilience in communities at home and abroad. I am heartened to see individuals and organisations contribute readily and generously towards this cause.

As Singapore works towards its goal of becoming a COVID-resilient nation, I am confident that we will rise above the current challenges and emerge stronger than before. I hope that every one of us will continue to exemplify the SG Cares spirit, to build a more caring and inclusive society.

Maldives Inaugurates Chinese-Built Apron At Velena Int’l Airport

MALE, A new expanded west apron, at the Velena International Airport (VIA) in Maldives, has been officially inaugurated, general contractor, Beijing Urban Construction Group (BUCG), said.

The expanded apron covers an area of 35,000 square metres and is part of the VIA development project. It was built by BUCG to international standards and can accommodate a maximum of nine code C aircraft.

The inauguration ceremony was held on Thursday and attended by Managing Director and CEO of the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), the country’s state-owned airport operator, Gordon Andrew, and Island Aviation Managing Director, Mohamed Mihadh, and Airline Operator Committee Chairman, Mahjoob Abdullah.

Gordon said, the apron was constructed close to the domestic terminal, thereby eliminating the need for buses to transport passengers to aircraft. He added that, the new apron would be useful in the upcoming tourist season.

“Passengers departing and arriving will see a lot of easements due to this. Moreover, our services will become speedier for sure,” Gordon was quoted as saying, by the Sun Online.

The first aircraft to park at the newly expanded apron was an Airbus A321, belonging to Maldives’ national airline Maldivians. The plane was welcomed with a water salute, as it landed on Thursday afternoon.

Malaysia’s Smart Glove says it opposes forced labour after U.S. import ban

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia’s Smart Glove on Saturday said it was opposed to forced labour and committed to the well-being of its workers, after the United States banned imports from the rubber glove maker for alleged forced labour practices.

On Thursday, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) issued a “Withhold Release Order” https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/us-bans-imports-fifth-malaysian-firm-15-months-over-alleged-forced-labour-2021-11-05 prohibiting imports from Smart Glove and its group of companies, citing what the CBP called reasonable evidence that indicates “Smart Glove production facilities utilise forced labour”.

Smart Glove, which makes gloves used in the medical and food industries, became the fifth Malaysian firm in 15 months to be slapped with such a ban.

In an emailed statement, Smart Glove said it had contacted CBP to obtain more information about the ban and that it would look to resolve the action.

“Smart Glove stands against forced labour and is committedto all of our workers’ health, safety and well-being; and we remain dedicated to their welfare,” it said.

Malaysian factories – which make everything from palm oil to medical gloves and iPhone components – have come under increasing scrutiny over allegations of abuse of foreign workers, who form a significant part of the manufacturing workforce.

Smart Glove’s peers have also faced similar U.S. action over alleged labour abuses.

Supermax Corp SUPM.KL, banned last month https://www.reuters.com/world/us-bars-malaysian-glove-maker-supermax-over-alleged-labour-abuses-2021-10-21, has said it will speed up a process it had begun in 2019 to meet International Labour Organisation standards on workers welfare.

Top Glove TPGC.KL – the world’s largest latex glove maker- was barred by the CBP last July. The ban was lifted last month.
