Pasay: Association of Firearms and Ammunition Dealers (AFAD) members and over 40 exhibitors are participating in the 31st AFAD Defense and Sporting Arms Show, which commenced Wednesday at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City. The five-day event aims to deliver an enhanced experience, backed by legislative support for the firearms industry's growth in both business and sporting sectors.
According to Philippines News Agency, AFAD spokesperson Alaric "Aric" Topacio highlighted the exhibition's array of world-class imported and locally-made firearms and equipment, catering to sports shooters and responsible gun owners. He emphasized the positive developments in the industry's pursuit of recognition, which have invigorated participants and exhibitors alike.
The event's opening ceremony was attended by notable figures, including National Police Commission (Napolcom) Vice Chairperson and Executive Officer Rafael Vicente Calinisan, Interior and Local Government Undersecretary for Peace and Order Nestor Sanares, and AFAD president Edwin Lim. Additionally, members of the national team who secured medals at the 2025 International Practical Shooting Championships PCC and Mini Rifle Worldshoot in the Czech Republic were present.
Topacio praised the national team's achievement of 16 gold medals, noting that they trained with limited ammunition and preparation. He stated that their success demonstrated the country's ability to compete with the world's best.
The national team is set to participate in the second IPSC Action Air World Championships, scheduled from July 26 to August 3 in Iloilo City. Topacio remarked on the recent Congressional action, which not only benefited the Philippine shooting team and responsible gun owners but also bolstered the firearms industry. The legislative changes aim to establish fair, practical, and responsible regulations.
The amended bill now allows non-sports shooters to purchase up to 500 rounds of ammunition, a significant increase from the previous limit of 50 rounds. Members of the Philippine shooting team can now access up to 5,000 rounds for intensive training and competitions.
