Five North Korean prisoners who were awaiting trial for robbery, rape and murder escaped from prison in August, taking advantage of lax security while they were repairing a roof to slip over a prison wall. While one was caught and another turned himself in, the other three men are believed to be trying to escape to the relative freedom of nearby China. Accounts of jailbreaks are rare in North Korea, one of the world’s harshest police states.
