TRIO TO BE CHARGED FOR MOTOR INSURANCE FRAUD

Three men, aged from 25 to 31, will be charged on 5 November 2021 for their suspected involvement in engaging in a conspiracy to cheat an insurance company of motor insurance claims amounting to about $74,000.

On 2 July 2020, the Police received information of alleged fraudulent motor insurance claims submitted by two men, aged 25 and 26, who had reported themselves as the passenger and driver respectively. The claims were linked to a road traffic accident between two motor vehicles which took place on 25 March 2020 along Esplanade Drive, at the junction with Collyer Quay and Fullerton Road.

Investigations revealed that a 31-year-old man was allegedly the actual driver of one of the motor vehicles and was not in possession of a valid driving licence at the time of the accident. He then allegedly engaged the 26-year-old man to falsely report himself as the driver. The latter subsequently recruited the 25-year-old man as his purported passenger and for both to submit false injury claims.

The 26-year-old man faces three counts of engaging in a conspiracy to cheat under Section 420, read with Section 116, of the Penal Code, Chapter 224. The offence carries an imprisonment term of up to 10 years and a fine. He will also be charged with two counts of breaching Regulation 6 of the COVID-19 (Temporary Measures) (Control Order) Regulation 2020. The offence carries a punishment of a fine not exceeding $10,000 or an imprisonment term not exceeding six months or both.
