Speech by President Halimah Yacob at Keppel Charity Golf 2021

Mr S Iswaran, Minister for Transport

Mr Tan Chong Meng, Keppel Club Chairman

Ladies and gentlemen

Good afternoon. I am happy to join you at the 51st Annual Keppel Charity Golf tournament. Keppel Club first collaborated with President’s Challenge in 2019. In the two years since, you have raised $1.2 million for the President’s Challenge. I thank Keppel Club for your contribution in helping those in need.

Despite the unprecedented challenges caused by COVID-19, Keppel Club has remained steadfast in your commitment to support the underprivileged in our community. This year, you are raising a record $1.2 million for the President’s Challenge. Your generosity will make a difference to the 93 President’s Challenge benefitting agencies that span a wide range of sectors, including healthcare, eldercare, disability, children, families and youth, sports, arts and rehabilitation. On behalf of the President’s Challenge, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude for your support.

One example of a benefitting agency and programme is the Down Syndrome Association (Singapore)’s Early Start Family Programme (ESFP), which provides virtual intervention support and on-site therapy to families with infants and toddlers with Down Syndrome. In particular, the online therapy sessions help to improve the efficiency of coaching of parents and family members, so that they are empowered with the appropriate skills for caregiving.

I hope that more organisations will follow the lead of Keppel Club, and come on board to support the President’s Challenge. Many lives have been impacted by the pandemic. With the support of partners such as Keppel Club, the President’s Challenge has been able to mobilise resources to support those in need. Let us continue to work closely together, to uplift communities and empower lives.

I understand that this year is also a historic milestone for the Keppel Club Charity Golf tournament, as it will be the last game held at the Bukit Chermin location. I hope that you will continue your legacy in fundraising and supporting communities in need as you transit to your new location at Sime, Singapore Island Country Club, in January 2022. Once again, thank you to Keppel Club, sponsors, and donors for your generous donations to the President’s Challenge and other charities. It is with your support that we can better overcome this crisis of our generation.
