Senate Confirms Elbridge Colby as Pentagon Policy Chief

Washington: The Senate voted on Tuesday to confirm U.S. President Donald Trump's pick for under secretary of defense for policy, a position that could influence the United States' approach to the South Korea-U.S. security partnership.According to Yonhap News Agency, the upper chamber approved Elbridge Colby for the Pentagon's No. 3 post with a 54-45 vote. Colby previously served as deputy assistant secretary of defense for strategy and force development from 2017-2018 during the first Trump administration. His confirmation may signal a shift in U.S. military focus, particularly regarding the role of U.S. Forces Korea (USFK).Colby has advocated for a reevaluation of USFK's responsibilities, emphasizing the importance of addressing threats from China. In an interview with Yonhap News Agency last year, he highlighted the need for a USFK overhaul. He suggested that the forces should be more oriented towards managing China-related contingencies rather than solely focusing on North Korean issues.During his S enate confirmation hearing last month, Colby supported efforts to strengthen South Korea's role within the U.S. alliance. He addressed concerns over the ongoing negotiations for transferring wartime operational control (OPCON) to Seoul. The OPCON transition depends on several conditions, including South Korea's capability to lead combined forces, its strike and air defense capabilities, and a favorable regional security environment.Colby has also emphasized the importance of updating the Seoul-Washington alliance. He noted it should reflect the broader geopolitical and military challenges faced by both nations, ensuring the partnership remains relevant and effective.
