Second Attempt to Detain Yoon as Warrant Expires Today

Seoul: The expiration of a detention warrant for Yoon has led to a possible second attempt for detainment, as reported by several major South Korean newspapers.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Kyunghyang Shinmun highlighted that a second attempt for Yoon’s detainment is possible since the warrant expires today. The Kookmin Daily reported that an appeal against Yoon’s detention warrant was dismissed, which undermines Yoon’s grounds for refusal.

The Donga Ilbo noted that the Corruption Investigation Office (CIO) is reviewing the second attempt for Yoon’s detainment as the warrant expiration looms. The Seoul Shinmun pointed out a controversy regarding the inclusion of current and former transport ministry officials in the Muan airport accident investigation board, sparking conflict-of-interest concerns. Meanwhile, Segye Times mentioned that there is a review underway for requesting an arrest warrant following Yoon’s noncompliance with detention.

The Chosun Ilbo reported on the stagnation of domestic spe
nding following a martial law order. Simultaneously, the JoongAng Ilbo emphasized that Yoon’s detainment faces a deadline today. The Hankyoreh added that martial law troops carried some 50,000 live rounds, contrary to Yoon’s claim of being unarmed. Furthermore, the Hankook Ilbo highlighted that the court dismissed Yoon’s appeal against the detention and search warrant.

In addition to the focus on Yoon, the Maeil Business Newspaper reported on plans to establish a consulate in Florida, where former President Trump owns a resort. The Korea Economic Daily reiterated the CIO’s stance that an arrest warrant would be reviewed if Yoon continues to refuse detention. Moreover, English-language dailies such as Korea Herald and Korea Times discussed the looming deadline on Yoon’s warrant and the potential for another detention attempt. The Korea JoongAng Daily also noted the CIO’s review of multiple measures concerning the situation.
