The Royal Government of Cambodia is committed to constructing more school buildings throughout the country to respond to the increasing number of students.
Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen highlighted the commitment while presiding over a graduation ceremony of over 2,300 students of the National Institute of Education in Phnom Penh this morning.
Budget allocation for the education sector will focus not only on the increase of monthly salary of teachers and education staff, but also on the construction of school buildings to replace the old ones and to respond to the growing number of students and of accommodation buildings for teachers and students.
To ensure social equity, he underlined, it is necessary to invest in education, health and other areas for the people’s benefit such as roads which both the poor and the rich can use, and schools which poor and rich families can send their children to.
According to the Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sports, for the 2022-2023 academic year, Cambodia has a total of 8,607 kindergartens, 8,067 primary schools, 1,340 lower secondary schools and 816 high schools.
There are in total 3,676,575 students (49.7 percent are female), of them 380,788 are pre-school students, 2,200,021 are primary school students, 694,161 are lower secondary school students, and 401,605 are high school students.
Besides, Cambodia has 19 technical and vocational education institutions with a total of 3,259 students, and 132 higher education institutions – 48 public and 84 private institutions – located in 20 provinces and capital with 205,636 students, of them 47.5 percent are female.
