Manila: Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil has directed all police units to be on heightened alert to ensure the safety of motorists and commuters during Holy Week. During a command conference at Camp Crame, Marbil emphasized the importance of preventing common crimes such as theft and burglary, particularly in terminals, tourist spots, and other areas where people gather.
According to Philippines News Agency, Marbil instructed all PNP units to enhance the implementation of the gun ban and improve coordination with barangay officials, tanod (watchmen), and private security personnel to address potential threats. He emphasized the importance of transparency in crime reporting, urging police personnel to use body-worn cameras to maintain accountability.
Marbil reminded officers to remain apolitical ahead of the May 12 mid-term national and local elections, stressing that their duty is to serve the Filipino people rather than political interests. The PNP also issued reminders to travelers to prioritize safety and vigilance, urging them to adhere to traffic and safety laws to ensure a solemn and orderly observance of the Lenten season.
The PNP advised motorists to check their vehicles before traveling and avoid reckless driving. Commuters were urged to secure their valuables and stay vigilant in crowded areas. Marbil called on the public to cooperate with law enforcement authorities to achieve a peaceful and accident-free Holy Week, emphasizing the importance of responsible road use and immediate reporting of any suspicious activities to authorities.
