BATAAN PROVINCE—The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) resumed siphoning operations this weekend on the sunken MTKR Terranova in Bataan, successfully extracting over 1.3 million liters of oily waste after a pause due to adverse weather conditions.

According to the Philippines News Agency, the PCG’s contracted salvor, Harbor Star, managed to siphon 52,355 liters of oily waste on Saturday and an additional 8,809 liters on Sunday. Lt. Comm. Michael John Encina, PCG Station Bataan Commander, noted that the material extracted over the weekend primarily consisted of water, but emphasized that the operation would continue through Tuesday to ensure complete removal of all industrial fuel oil (IFO) from the vessel. Prior to its sinking, the MTKR Terranova was carrying approximately 1.4 million liters of IFO.

Concurrent with the siphoning efforts, the PCG conducted aerial surveillance over the site and deployed BRP Sindangan to monitor the surrounding waters. Meanwhile, the FES Challenger, another contracted salvor, began operations to siphon seawater from the sunken MTKR Jason Bradley, which is scheduled to be refloated and transported to the Diving Industry Shipyard in Mariveles for further processing this Saturday.

Additionally, the PCG's oil spill response team patrolled the area around MTKR Jason Bradley and reported no visible oil sheen, indicating no further leakage at the moment.
