QUEZON CITY—Johnny Wellem Carzano emerged victorious in the FIDE-rated Standard tournament hosted by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) this Sunday at the Philippine Academy for Chess Excellence (PACE) along Mindanao Avenue.
According to the Philippines News Agency, Carzano outperformed top contenders such as Karl Friedrich Canalita, Justin Jed Ortillo, Danry Seth Romualdez, John Kenneth Gelua, and French Cobi Francisco, securing 5.0 points and edging out Arvie Tombo on tiebreak points to clinch the title. Carzano expressed elation at his performance, especially given the high level of competition, noting that many of the top players from Metro Manila and surrounding provinces participated in the event.
Apollo Agapay and Lance Nathaniel Orlina also performed exceptionally, finishing second and third, respectively, each with 4.5 points. The tournament showcased a deep field of talent with players like Freddie Talaboc, Emmanuel Barbosa, Frankel Angela Magpily, Joshua Hesed Crismo, John Kenneth Gelua, and LJ Getubig rounding out the top ten.
The event highlighted the competitive spirit and skill of participants, contributing to the development of chess in the Philippines.
