Pasig city: The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Thursday met with school executives to discuss traffic measures to address chokepoints near schools in the National Capital Region (NCR).
According to Philippines News Agency, in a meeting at the MMDA head office in Pasig City, MMDA Chair Romando 'Don' Artes identified critical chokepoints in the Ortigas area, particularly around La Salle Greenhills and Saint Pedro Poveda College. The MMDA has started installing closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras on roads leading to schools as part of the No Contact Apprehension Policy (NCAP).
Artes noted that traffic congestion at several schools is mainly due to the high volume of vehicles transporting students, often occupying two or three lanes. He emphasized the need for immediate action to improve traffic flow. He also mentioned that President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has endorsed the NCAP implementation to promote road discipline among Filipinos. Traffic enforcers will continue to be stationed around schools requiring traffic management.
The meeting included representatives from La Salle Greenhills, Saint Pedro Poveda College, Ateneo De Manila University, Miriam College, Xavier School, and Immaculate Conception Academy. These school executives expressed their support for the NCAP and committed to actively cooperating in reducing vehicular congestion in their areas.
Quezon City Assistant City Administrator for Operations Alberto Kimpo shared during the meeting that traffic flow has improved along Katipunan Avenue, home to several universities, following the implementation of measures like the zipper lane during rush-hour.
