MANILA—The Manila City Council has officially designated August 8 as Mayor Alfredo S. Lim Day in honor of the former mayor, senator, and police officer who was renowned for his stringent anti-crime measures and significant contributions to the city’s development.
According to the Philippines News Agency, the resolution was passed on August 15, spearheaded by Second District Councilor Numero Lim, who highlighted Mayor Lim’s rise from humble beginnings to becoming one of the most respected public servants in the Philippines. The council, including Lim’s grandson, 1st District Councilor Nino dela Cruz, unanimously supported the measure.
The late Mayor Lim, who served Manila from 1992 to 1998 and from 2007 to 2013, was praised for his relentless fight against crime and corruption, earning him the nickname ‘Dirty Harry.’ His administration was noted for its focus on education through building schools, enhancing educational facilities, and providing scholarships, ensuring accessible quality education for Manila’s children.
Mayor Lim also significantly improved healthcare in the city by establishing several public hospitals and was commended for his visionary leadership that left a lasting impact on Manila. His achievements garnered numerous local and international accolades. Lim passed away on August 8, 2020, at the age of 89 due to COVID-19 complications. Current Mayor Honey Lacuna lauded the Council’s swift action in passing the resolution, remarking on Lim’s lasting legacy, which includes the founding of Universidad de Manila to provide free tertiary education to deserving students.
