MANILA – In an intense start to the Shakey's Super League Collegiate Pre-season Championship, De La Salle University and University of the East secured victories against formidable opponents at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum on Saturday.
According to Philippines News Agency, De La Salle triumphed over the University of the Philippines-Diliman with a scoreline of 25-14, 18-25, 26-24, 25-12. The match, which lasted two hours and 36 minutes, saw standout performances from Shevana Maria Laput with 18 points and Angel Anne Canino, who contributed 16 points. The Lady Spikers’ decisive moment came in the fourth set with a dominating 14-2 run, propelled by effective plays from middle blockers Amie Provido and Katrina Del Castillo.
La Salle's ability to maintain composure under pressure was evident as they overcame a late rally by UP in the third set, securing the set with strategic plays by Laput and Provido. Provido and Del Castillo ended the game with 10 and eight points, respectively.
In another match, the University of the East overcame Lyceum of the Philippines University in four sets, 24-26, 25-21, 25-22, 25-14. Jelai Gajero led the Lady Warriors with a robust performance, tallying 20 points after recovering from a knee injury. Supporting efforts came from Riza Nogales and KC Cepada, contributing 15 and nine points, respectively.
These early matches set a competitive tone for the tournament, showcasing the high level of collegiate volleyball talent and the determination of the teams involved.
