Ilocos Norte: Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur marked their 207th founding anniversary on Sunday, celebrating over two centuries since their separation through a royal decree.
According to Philippines News Agency, officials and local government employees in Ilocos Norte participated in a cleanup drive and tree-planting activities, collecting tons of plastic waste, particularly from Laoag City, following a thanksgiving concert. During the commemoration at Saud Beach in Pagudpud, Vice Governor Cecilia Araneta-Marcos highlighted the province’s resilience and unity over the years. “Today is not just a time for reflection but also a moment to re-affirm our commitment, building a cleaner and more sustainable Ilocos Norte for future generations,” Marcos stated, representing Governor Matthew Manotoc.
To further promote environmental sustainability, 275 saplings were planted across Adams, Burgos, Badoc, and Pagudpud, including 100 fire trees, 125 talisay, and 50 coconut trees.
In Ilocos Sur, the province celebrated with a grand parade attended by guest celebrities, local government units, schools, and socio-civic organizations, showcasing its rich traditions, culture, and heritage. Governor Jeremias Singson issued Executive Order No. 07, suspending classes and work in public offices on Monday to allow residents to fully engage in the weekend festivities.
Though commemorated separately, both provinces share a united vision of cultural pride and environmental preservation. The 1818 royal decree not only split Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur but also included northern La Union and present-day Abra under Ilocos Sur, while Lepanto and Amburayan in Mt. Province were later annexed.
