LIPA CITY, BATANGAS — Filipino golfer John Paul Agustin Jr. and Korean Yunju An captured top honors in their respective divisions of the 13-15 age category at the ICTSI Junior PGT Series 6, held at Mount Malarayat Golf and Country Club on Wednesday.
According to Philippines News Agency, 15-year-old Agustin, a student from Elizabeth Seton School, clinched victory with rounds of 37 and 76, totaling 155, overcoming former leader John Majgen Gomez who faltered with a back nine 44 and an 83. "I knew I had a shot right from the start, being only three strokes behind the leader," Agustin remarked on his strategy entering the final round, which followed a cancellation of Monday's first round due to bad weather. He also credited his improved chipping and putting for his confident performance on the final day.
Gomez, from Taguig, ended the tournament with an 83 for a total of 159, placing second, while pre-tournament favorite Jose Carlos Taruc from Riviera and Luisita took third with an 80 for a total of 165. Agustin's victory places him in a strong position for the final spot in the seven-stage Luzon series, culminating in the Match Play Championship scheduled for October 1-4 at The Country Club in Laguna.
Meanwhile, Yunju An managed to secure the win despite struggling with the windy conditions, which resulted in four bogeys over the last five holes, ending with a score of 151. "I didn't play well, my shots were off due to the windy conditions, which led to a lot of bogeys," An disclosed through an interpreter. Mona Sarines, finishing strong with a total of 153, claimed the runner-up position, while her twin sister, Lisa, tied with Kendra Garingalao for third place with a score of 163.
