Ex-President Yoon Challenges Legality of Detention Warrant Request

Seoul: Former President Yoon Suk Yeol's legal team has raised concerns over the legality of an independent counsel's request for a detention warrant, arguing that the move infringes on Yoon's legal rights. The legal representatives have submitted a written opinion to the Seoul Central District Court, which is deliberating on whether to approve the warrant.According to Yonhap News Agency, Special Prosecutor Cho Eun-suk's team submitted the detention warrant request on Tuesday. The warrant accuses Yoon of instructing the Presidential Security Service to obstruct the execution of a detention warrant by the state anti-corruption investigation agency in January. Additionally, it alleges Yoon deleted phone records with military commanders in connection to martial law imposition on December 3, and refused to comply with three police summonses for questioning.Yoon's lawyers assert that the former president has not received any summons notices from the special prosecutor and lacks information about the office's lo cation and the officials involved. They argue that the request for a detention warrant bypasses essential legal procedures, violating Yoon's right to defense. The legal team further contends that citing police summonses as grounds for the detention warrant is invalid, as the independent counsel and the police operate as separate investigative bodies. The court's decision on the warrant is anticipated as early as Wednesday.
