Seoul: The main opposition Democratic Party (DP) and its supporters organized a significant rally in central Seoul on Saturday, vehemently criticizing the Yoon Suk Yeol government for alleged mishandling of state affairs. The protestors demanded a special counsel investigation into first lady Kim Keon Hee, highlighting the ongoing political tensions in South Korea.According to Yonhap News Agency, DP leader Lee Jae-myung, accompanied by approximately 100,000 party members and supporters, gathered near Gwanghwamun Square to stage the protest. This rally marked the fifth consecutive weekly protest organized by the DP. The assembly was a call for President Yoon to endorse a special counsel bill to investigate alleged misconduct by first lady Kim, including her suspected involvement in a stock manipulation scheme, election nomination interference, and the acceptance of luxury gifts.Despite the growing pressure, President Yoon Suk Yeol vetoed the bill on Tuesday, marking his third rejection of the DP-led propos al. During the rally, Rep. Kim Min-seok emphasized the party's stance, declaring that holding Yoon accountable and seeking justice for Kim Keon Hee is integral to the battle for democracy. The rally concluded with the DP joining other civic groups in a candlelight vigil, symbolizing their protest against the government. While the DP-led protests were prominent, conservative civic groups also held a rally in support of the government. However, officials reported that both demonstrations proceeded without any physical altercations, maintaining a peaceful yet charged political atmosphere in the city.
