DMW Mobilizes Support for OFWs and Families Impacted by Cebu Earthquake

Cebu: The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has mobilized assistance for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), including their families, who were affected by the 6.9-magnitude earthquake that jolted the Visayas on Tuesday evening.

According to Philippines News Agency, Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac stated that he has instructed regional offices to work in conjunction with the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) to assess the condition of OFWs, seafarers, and their families in the severely affected areas. These areas include Biliran, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar; Catbalogan City, Sta. Rita, and Marabut in Samar; as well as Isabel, Calubian, Kananga, Palompon, Merida, and Tacloban City in Leyte; Southern Leyte; and Ormoc City.

He also confirmed the continuation of services for affected OFWs, particularly those facing disruptions at airports and ports due to affected flight schedules. DMW regional offices in the Western, Eastern, and Central Visayas have been instructed to remain operational to support the OFWs.

Cacdac highlighted that airport counters managed by DMW and OWWA remain open, ensuring uninterrupted service for the OFWs who are either leaving or returning. He emphasized the directive from the President to maintain these services without disruption.

The immediate priority is to identify and address the urgent needs of OFW families, ensuring that necessary support is delivered promptly. Cacdac also mentioned that employment documentation services are available online, with DMW Central and Regional Offices ready to assist.

In line with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive, the DMW is prepared to act while respecting the primary disaster response agencies' mandate to respond first to affected areas. For urgent assistance, families of OFWs and seafarers are encouraged to contact the nearest DMW and OWWA Regional Office or call the OWWA 24/7 hotline 1348.
