DICT Chief to Deliver Additional Starlink Equipment to Storm-Affected Masbate

Masbate: Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Secretary Henry Aguda is set to visit Masbate to assess the communication and internet connectivity needs of the storm-hit province.

According to Philippines News Agency, Secretary Aguda will meet with Masbate Governor Richard Kho to deliver 10 more Starlink units. During the visit, Aguda, along with telecommunications representatives, will inspect several key areas, including the Masbate provincial office, to assess free charging sites and evaluate Wi-Fi connectivity in the region.

In a phone interview, DICT officer in charge regional director Rachel Ann Grabador revealed that three Starlink units, 10 routers, and a 2kW solar-powered station had already been deployed in Masbate province to support communication needs and data gathering. “We are here today in the province of Masbate to evaluate the situation of its ICT facilities. Sec. Aguda is also expected to arrive today to discuss further assistance that can be provided to the province,” she stated.

Grabador noted that the Starlink units are installed at the Masbate Airport communications tower and the administrative office of the Masbate Provincial Hospital. This initiative aims to enhance the hospital’s daily operations, particularly in internal communications, records management, and the swift coordination of medical services.

Additionally, DICT teams are assessing affected communities to evaluate the damage caused by Severe Tropical Storm Opong (international name Bualoi) to the free Wi-Fi units.
