Manila: The Department of Agriculture (DA) announced that ‘Sulit rice’ will soon be available in 24 Kadiwa ng Pangulo (KNP) Centers and kiosks. Sulit rice, which is 100 percent broken but white, will be sold at PHP36 per kilogram.
According to Philippines News Agency, Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. mentioned that the official rollout of the Sulit Rice program will be finalized following a positive public reception during its trial in two KNP sites in Metro Manila. He emphasized the need to ensure sufficient stock for the rollout, hinting at a possible launch next week.
DA Assistant Secretary Arnel de Mesa stated that the cheaper rice option will initially be available in existing KNP sites, including those at LRT and MRT stations. He also indicated plans for expansion to Central Luzon and Calabarzon, targeting specific areas such as Bulacan, Pampanga, Rizal, Cavite, and Laguna by February or March.
Currently, KNP sites offer other affordable rice options, such as mixed local and imported well-milled rice at PHP40 per kilogram under the Rice for All program, and aging but good quality stocks of rice from the National Food Authority (NFA) for the vulnerable sector at PHP29 per kilogram.
