Fortinet Research Finds Over 80% of Organizations Experience Cyberattacks that Target Employees

New research underscores importance of effective cyber awareness training for employees to decrease cyber risks, with more than 50% of leaders indicating their employees lack proper knowledge

SUNNYVALE, Calif., June 06, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) —

John Maddison, EVP of Products and CMO at Fortinet
“Our 2023 Security Awareness and Training Global Research Brief underscores the crucial role employees play in preventing cyberattacks. It also highlights the critical need for organizations to prioritize security awareness and training services to ensure employees serve as the first line of defense.”

News Summary
Fortinet® (NASDAQ: FTNT), the global cybersecurity leader driving the convergence of networking and security, today released its 2023 Security Awareness and Training Global Research Brief, highlighting the importance of organizations building a cyber-aware workforce to strengthen their security posture and reduce cyberattacks.

Enabling Employees to Protect their Organization’s Most Critical Digital Assets
Organizations are grappling with an increasingly sophisticated threat landscape. The most recent Global Threat Landscape Report from Fortinet’s FortiGuard Labs found that ransomware threats remain at peak levels with no evidence of slowing down globally. At the same time, Fortinet’s 2023 Cybersecurity Skills Gap Global Report found that 84% of organizations experienced one or more breaches in 2022.

And now the latest research from Fortinet’s 2023 Security Awareness and Training Global Research Brief reveals that more than 90% of leaders believe that increased employee cybersecurity awareness would help decrease the occurrence of cyberattacks. As organizations face increasing cyber risks, the research highlights the important role of employees in serving as an organization’s first line of defense in protecting their organization from cybercrime. Additional key findings from Fortinet’s research include:

  • Employees are being targeted by cyber criminals. The research found that 81% of organizations faced malware, phishing, and password attacks last year which mainly were targeted at users. This underscores that employees can be an organization’s weakest point or one of its most powerful defenses.
  • Having an effective training program is key to instilling good cyber hygiene in employees. Eighty-five percent of leaders say their organization has a security awareness and training program, yet more than 50% believe their employees still lack cybersecurity knowledge. This gap suggests the training programs in place may not be as effective as they could be, resulting in inconsistency in how employees apply good cyber hygiene practices or that training is not reinforced sufficiently.
  • Cybersecurity is increasingly becoming a priority for the Board of Directors. The report found that 93% of organizations indicated their board of directors are asking about the organizations cyber defenses and strategy.

Building a Cyber Aware Workforce with Fortinet’s Security Awareness and Training Service
For organizations looking to implement cybersecurity awareness training for their employees or those evaluating the effectiveness of their current program, Fortinet offers its Security Awareness and Training service to develop a cyber-aware workforce. Designed by the Fortinet Training Institute’s world-class trainers, the service covers a broad range of topics in a practical way and reinforces learnings with reminders and checks, helping to improve training outcomes. Organizations deploying the service also have access to a dashboard and reporting to address cyber insurance and compliance needs.

The service uniquely leverages FortiGuard Labs threat intelligence, providing frequently updated training informed by developments observed across the threat landscape. Additionally, the service aligns with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) guidelines – NIST 800-50 and NIST 800-16 – to further ensure key topics are covered including, information security, data privacy, physical security, password protection and internet security.

Fortinet has also tailored this service for educators and made it available for free to school districts and systems across the United States and local education authorities in the United Kingdom, with plans to continue increasing access globally.

About the Fortinet Cyber Awareness Survey:

  • The survey was conducted among more than 1,800 IT and/or cybersecurity decision-makers from 29 different locations.
  • Survey respondents came from a range of industries, including technology (21%), manufacturing (16%), and financial services (13%).

Noted Vaccine Researcher Thomas P. Monath Awarded Sabin’s Gold Medal; Cameroon Physician Sangwe Clovis Nchinjoh Receives Rising Star Award

Sabin 2023 Gold Medal and Rising Star Awards

Sabin Vaccine Institute Chief Executive Officer Amy Finan (center) awarded the Sabin’s 30th Gold Medal Award to Dr. Thomas P. Monath (right) and Sabin’s 2023 Rising Star Award to Dr. Sangwe Clovis Nchinjoh of Cameroon on Monday, June 5, 2023 at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C.

WASHINGTON, June 06, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The Sabin Vaccine Institute today awarded the 30th Albert B. Sabin Gold Medal Award to Thomas P. Monath, MD, and its Rising Star Award to Sangwe Clovis Nchinjoh, MD, MPH, in a ceremony at Washington D.C.’s National Academy of Sciences building.

Dr. Monath was selected for the Gold Medal for his more than four decades of commitment to advancing knowledge of arboviruses and vaccine research and development (R&D) that contributed to the development of several innovative vaccines including those for Ebola Zaire, smallpox, dengue, Japanese encephalitis and West Nile.

The Gold Medal, celebrating three decades of recognition, is Sabin’s highest scientific honor. It is given annually to a distinguished member of the global health community who has made exceptional contributions to vaccinology or a complementary field. Past award recipients include leaders of vaccinology and vaccine advocacy such as Drs. Barney Graham, Carol Baker, Bill Foege, Anne Gershon, Stanley Plotkin, and Kathrin Jansen.

“We are delighted to recognize Dr. Monath with our Gold Medal award for his lifelong commitment to prevent and control infectious disease and for his exemplary work on numerous vaccines that have benefitted humanity and saved lives,” says Amy Finan, Sabin’s chief executive officer. “His leadership in the vaccine field is unique in that he developed important vaccines as well as led public efforts to prepare for and address major global health threats.”

Dr. Thomas P. Monath, 30th Sabin Gold Medal Awardee

Dr. Thomas P. Monath was presented the 30th Sabin Gold Medal in a ceremony at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C. on Monday, June 5, 2023.

Dr. Monath said the Gold Medal stands out among the honors he has received over the years. “It was always my ambition to develop vaccines, make vaccines, do something tangible to help people. In my early career as an epidemiologist, I didn’t get a chance to develop the actual countermeasures that help save people’s lives, especially in underserved populations. That was the appeal that motivated me. It is a great honor to win this recognition, but that honor really rests on the contributions of my peers and many colleagues along the way.”

After serving as an epidemiologist and Director of the Division of Vector-Borne Viral Diseases at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Dr. Monath moved to the U.S. Army to learn vaccine development first-hand and retired as colonel after serving as Chief of the Virology Division at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID).

In over 20 years in public service, he was deeply engaged in investigating emerging viral diseases, such as viral encephalitis, dengue, yellow fever, and Lassa fever, affecting underserved countries in Africa and Latin America. He was responsible for uncovering the rodent host reservoir of Lassa fever.

In the private sector, he developed a novel platform for vaccine development and brought four human vaccines and one veterinary vaccine through regulatory approval, including a second-generation smallpox vaccine. He has published more than 425 scientific papers, six books on virology and vaccine development, and has 35 patents to his name.

Sabin’s Rising Star is awarded to encourage and recognize the next generation of vaccine and immunization leaders. Dr. Nchinjoh, a physician, was selected for developing ground-breaking techniques to reach zero-dose children — those who have never received the protection of routine childhood vaccinations — in missed communities and conflict settings in Cameroon.

“With his focus on strengthening immunization and health services among some of our most neglected communities, Dr. Nchinjoh exemplifies the spirit behind the Rising Star award,” says Finan. “His contributions to identify and immunize zero-dose children in Cameroon serves as a model for other countries trying to reach those populations and can go a long way toward improving vaccination rates in much of the world.”

Dr. Sangwe Clovis Nchinjoh, Sabin 2023 Rising Star Awardee

Dr. Sangwe Clovis Nchinjoh of Cameroon was presented the 2023 Sabin Rising Star award at a ceremony at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, D.C. on Monday, June 5, 2023.

“I am most proud of the ripple effects from this award,” says Dr. Nchinjoh. “It’s going to help to share what we’ve been doing all these years, share the lessons, and help stakeholders adopt new methods for reaching communities. It’s also going to touch a lot of people that I work with, who will be inspired by seeing that the work we do is appreciated.”

A public health researcher with more than five years of leading and coordinating high impact multi-stakeholder programs, Dr. Nchinjoh’s findings led to the development and testing of service delivery models in sample communities in all ten regions of Cameroon. More than 8,500 zero-dose children in 20 target health areas were reached, including increasing vaccination coverage from 0% to 70% in a hard-to-reach island in Manoka district.

Vietnam court sentences music teacher to 8 years in prison

A court in Vietnam’s Dak Lak province has sentenced music lecturer Dang Dang Phuoc to eight years in prison and four years of probation for allegedly “conducting anti-state propaganda,” his wife and one of his lawyers told RFA Tuesday.

The 60-year-old instructor at Dak Lak Pedagogical College in Vietnam’s Central Highland, frequently posted on Facebook about educational issues, human rights violations, corrupt officials and social injustice.

Police arrested him on Sept. 8 last year, and charged him with “making, storing, spreading or propagating information, documents and items aimed at opposing the State of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam,” which carries a maximum 12-year prison term. Even though Phuoc didn’t receive the maximum sentence, lawyer Le Van Luan said the court should have been more lenient towards his client.

“With the circumstances of the case, that sentence is too heavy compared to what Mr. Phuoc did,” he said.

Phuoc’s case has drawn international attention, including from Human Rights Watch, who’s deputy Asia director Phil Robertson described the sentence as “outrageous and unacceptable.”

“What it reveals is the Vietnamese government’s total intolerance for ordinary citizens pointing out corruption, speaking out against injustice, and calling for accountability by local officials,” he said on hearing the verdict.

“Those were precisely the things that Dang Dang Phuoc did in Dak Lak, and now the government claims such whistle-blowing actions are propaganda against the state.”

During the past decade, Phuoc has campaigned against corruption and advocated for better protections for civil and political rights. He has signed several pro-democracy petitions and called for changes to Vietnam’s constitution, which grants the Communist Party a monopoly on power.

“This unjust prison sentence reveals General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong’s anti-corruption campaign is a sham game that is really more about holding on to power, and marginalizing political rivals, but does not care to address the Communist Party of Vietnam’s widespread malfeasance in its ranks,” said Robertson, comparing Trong with China’s authoritarian leader Xi Jinping.

Police kept a close watch on Phuoc’s wife Le Thi Ha ahead of the trial, warning her she would lose her job if she talked about the case on social media.

She was allowed to attend the trial, along with Phuoc’s four lawyers.

Ha told RFA her husband plans to appeal the verdict.

Junta helicopter attacks school in Myanmar’s Sagaing region

Myanmar’s military sent a helicopter gunship to attack a school in Sagaing region, injuring four people, locals told RFA Tuesday.

They said Monday’s attack on the school in Kale township’s Shu Khin Thar village was followed by the artillery bombardment of another village in the township, leaving a further three people injured, one critically.

Shu Khin Thar residents, who didn’t want to be named, said the helicopter opened fire for around five minutes on Monday morning.

Last Thursday was the start of a new academic year in Myanmar and a spokesperson for an ethnic Chin revolutionary group told RFA the junta is targeting schools in Kale township which are controlled by anti-regime forces.

“We consider this an attempt to threaten and halt the plans of the people to open a school in their village that is beyond [the junta’s] control,” the official from the Chin National Organization, Upper Chindwin Region told RFA on condition of anonymity.

Thirty minutes after the school attack, junta troops shelled Let Pan Chaung village injuring three locals. Residents said one person had their leg ripped off by a shell.

RFA has so far been unable to get the names and ages of the injured.

One Kale township resident, who declined to be named for safety reasons, said the tactics in both villages show junta forces are struggling to enforce military rule in Sagaing region.

“It highlights that they are already short on manpower and admit that they are completely out of control on the ground,” the person said.

“That’s why they are only using airstrikes.”

The co-leader of Kale township’s Internally Displaced Persons Assistance Group warned that the junta is likely to continue its campaign of air attacks in the area.

“People should dig bomb shelters and listen to the news because such situations happen sooner or later. They have no direction,” said Japan Gyi.

“Junta troops often fire heavy artillery and use airstrikes … to instill fear in the people.”

Kale was the first township to take up arms against the junta following the Feb. 1, 2021 coup. There are now more than 10 local defense groups, made up mostly of young people.

RFA called Sagaing region junta spokesperson Aye Hlaing Tuesday seeking comment on the school attack and village bombardment, but nobody answered.

There have been more than 1,400 airstrikes since the coup, resulting in 534 deaths, according to independent research group Nyan Lin Thit Analytica.
