Singapore Reports 910 New COVID-19 Cases

SINGAPORE– Singapore reported 910 new cases of COVID-19 infection yesterday, bringing the total tally in the city-state to 74,848.

 

Of the new cases, 803 are in the community, 103 in the migrant workers’ dormitories and the other four are imported ones, the Ministry of Health said, in a statement. Among the local new cases reported yesterday, 244 are seniors above 60 years.

 

A 72-year-old female Singaporean died from complications on Wednesday. She had not been vaccinated against COVID-19, and had a history of atypical chest pain, Graves’ disease, hypertension and dyslipidemia.

 

In total, 59 have died from complications due to COVID-19 infection, in Singapore.

 

A total of 837 COVID-19 cases are currently warded in hospital. There are currently 77 cases of serious illness, requiring oxygen supplementation, and 12 in critical condition, in the ICU, said the MOH. Of those who have fallen very ill, 69 are seniors above 60 years.

 

As of Sept 15, 82 percent of local population has completed two doses of COVID-19 vaccines, and 84 percent has received at least one dose, according to the MOH.

Myanmar Reports 1,790 New COVID-19 Cases

YANGON – The number of COVID-19 infections has increased to 440,741 in Myanmar, after 1,790 new cases were reported in the past 24 hours, according to a statement from the Ministry of Health yesterday.

 

The statement said that, 85 more deaths were reported, bringing the death toll to 16,869, so far.

 

A total of 391,268 patients have recovered, as of yesterday.

 

Myanmar detected its first two COVID-19 cases on Mar 23, last year.

Indonesian Capital Starts Pilot Cinema Reopening Programme

JAKARTA– The administration of Indonesias’s capital, Jakarta, yesterday, started conducting its pilot cinema reopening programme, as the number of daily COVID-19 cases in the city was declining, a city official said.

 

The Jakarta tourism agency’s acting head, Gumilar Ekalaya, said, all movie theatres in the city are now using a mobile application called PeduliLindungi, for digital contact-tracing to help control COVID-19.

 

The COVID-19 restrictions on public activities in Jakarta have been eased since a few weeks ago, after a decline in the number of daily cases.

 

Shopping malls, restaurants and schools in the city have already reopened, under tightened health protocols.

 

Movie theaters are required to conduct health screening procedures to their employees and moviegoers.

 

A cinema must be reopened with a maximum capacity of 50 percent, and not allowed those under 12 years old to entre. Eating and drinking are also prohibited inside a movie house.

Brunei Continues COVID-19 Vaccination With China’s Sinopharm Donations

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN– Brunei resumed the COVID-19 first-dose vaccination yesterday, after receiving the Sinopharm vaccines from China days ago.

 

Due to a shortage of supply of COVID-19 vaccines, following thousands of locally transmitted cases detected since Aug, the Brunei government had to temporarily suspend the first-dose vaccination from Sept 1.

 

A total of 100,000 doses of Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine and 102,400 syringes donated by the Chinese government arrived in Brunei on Sept 12.

 

Brunei’s Second Minister of Foreign Affairs, Haji Erywan, and Minister of Health, Haji Mohd Isham, both expressed thanks to the Chinese government for contributing the Sinopharm vaccine, on behalf of the Sultanate.

 

According to Haji Mohd Isham, with the Sinopharm vaccine donation from China, and the incoming AstraZeneca vaccine from Japan, at least 100,000 more people in Brunei can be fully vaccinated.

 

According to Brunei’s Ministry of Health, the vaccination appointment slots for those affected by the first-dose postponement will be automatically shifted and they will be given priority in stages.

 

The health ministry said, the National Vaccination Programme is implemented with the aim of providing COVID-19 vaccine injections to all citizens and residents in Brunei, including foreigners residing in the country.

 

Brunei reported 109 new COVID-19 cases yesterday, bringing the national tally to 4,675.

 

All the new cases are local infections. While the source of infection of 60 local cases is still under investigation, four new clusters have been detected and two clusters have been closed, following no new cases in the clusters for 28 days, which brings the total number of active clusters to 84.

 

Currently 1,502 active cases are being treated and monitored at the National Isolation Centre, with 10 of them in critical condition and 25 other patients under close monitoring.

 

Brunei also reported 156 recoveries yesterday. There have been a total of 3,144 recovered patients and 29 deaths so far in the country.

Singapore’s Non-Oil Domestic Export Growth Narrows To 2.7 Percent In Aug

SINGAPORE– Singapore’s non-oil domestic exports (NODX), grew at a slower pace in Aug, as the year-on-year growth narrowed from 12.7 percent in July, to 2.7 percent, Enterprise Singapore, a government agency, announced today.

 

The electronic NODX expanded by 16.7 percent year on year in Aug, extending the 15 percent increase in the previous month. The non-electronic NODX declined by 1.4 percent in Aug, a reversal from the 12 percent rise in July.

 

On a month-on-month seasonally adjusted basis, Singapore’s NODX decreased by 3.6 percent in Aug, to 15.5 billion Singapore dollars (about 11.52 billion U.S. dollars), after a 0.9 percent decrease in the previous month.

 

Singapore’s non-oil re-exports (NORX) grew by 19 percent year on year in Aug, following the 13.9-percent rise in July. Both electronic and non-electronic NORX grew.

Malaysian King, Queen On Special Visit To UK

KUALA LUMPUR— The Malaysian King, Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, and the Queen Raja Permaisuri Agong, Tunku Hajah Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah, are making a special visit to the United Kingdom (UK) from Friday till Sept 27.

 

Wisma Putra said in a statement that Their Majesties will visit the Battersea Power Station, Malaysia’s iconic project in London which is a joint venture between Sime Darby Property, SP Setia Berhad, Employees Provident Fund (EPF) and Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB).

 

Their Majesties have consented to visit the Malaysian High Commission in London on Sept 24 for a meeting with Malaysians including entrepreneurs, academics, students and community leaders.

 

“On Sept 25, Their Majesties are scheduled to visit the Tun Abdul Razak Research Centre (TARRC) which is owned by the Malaysian Rubber Board (MRB) and one of the world’s leading rubber research and development (R&D) institutions,” the statement read.

 

His Majesty will receive a courtesy call by Chief of Defence Staff General Nicholas Carter and the meeting will touch on the defence cooperation between Malaysia and the United Kingdom.

 

According to Wisma Putra, the special visit symbolises the importance of the close relationship between Malaysia and the United Kingdom manifested at the highest level of government.

 

Apart from that, the visit signifies Their Majesties’ concern for the well-being of Malaysians as well as the investment performance and the country’s interests in the United Kingdom, especially during this challenging pandemic period.
