Visayas LGUs Encouraged to Implement Tech-Based Solutions for Community Safety


Negros occidental: The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is advocating for local government units (LGUs) to embrace science-based solutions to create resilient, smarter, and safer communities. This initiative will be highlighted during the Handa Pilipinas – Visayas Leg hosted in Negros Occidental at a local convention center from October 27 to 29.



According to Philippines News Agency, DOST – Negros Island Region Director Rowen Gelonga stated at a press launch held at Negros Residences that Handa Pilipinas aims to enhance disaster resiliency, awareness, and capability among Filipinos through science, technology, and innovation. Gelonga emphasized the importance of using technology-based solutions when addressing community challenges.



Negros Occidental DOST OIC-provincial director Glady Reyes noted that LGUs can select technologies suited to their specific hazard exposures. Handa Pilipinas will offer a variety of technologies that LGUs can adapt to their unique needs, enabling customization based on local hazards.



Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office head Irene Bel Plote±a remarked that the event provides LGUs with an opportunity to emphasize prevention and mitigation in their disaster risk reduction and management plans. She expressed hope that the event would inspire LGUs to consider technological applications in their communities.



Themed ‘Padayon Visayas: STI for Resilient, United, and Sustainable Visayas,’ Handa Pilipinas – Visayas will begin with a keynote speech by DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. The event will feature best practices and strategies in disaster risk reduction and management from various LGUs and national agencies.



Technological innovations in nutrition solutions, smart warning systems, communication technologies, and startup-driven disaster response solutions will be featured. The event will include disaster preparedness exhibits and a conference attracting government leaders, scientists, innovators, educators, students, and media practitioners.



Primary and high school students are set to engage in disaster preparedness activities through the Brains and Breakthroughs Quiz Bowl. The event will conclude on October 29 with an awards ceremony for exhibitors and partners, along with a recap of provincial Handa expositions.
