BANGKOK– Thailand said yesterday, it detected two potential cases of the Omicron variant, after reporting two Thai women arriving from Nigeria tested positive.
The Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) said, a 46-year-old and a 36-year-old women, both back to Bangkok from Nigeria, tested positive for COVID-19, and further testing indicated both of them were “potentially” infected with the Omicron variant, Maratee Nalita Andamo, an official with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said, at the CCSA press conference.
Maratee said, the two patients were experiencing mild symptoms of cough and sore throat, and their specimens were sent for further testing, with results to come out in one or two days.
On Monday, the country confirmed the detection of its first case of Omicron variant, in a male U.S. visitor, arriving from Spain.
“There has been no local outbreak involving the Omicron variant,” Maratee said, adding that, the prevalent COVID-19 variant in Thailand remains the Delta variant, which accounts for 65.97 percent of reported cases.
Yesterday, Thailand recorded 3,618 new cases of COVID-19 and 38 more deaths, for the past 24 hours, taking the total tally to more than 2.15 million, including 21,035 deaths.
As of Tuesday, 59.2 percent of Thailand’s population have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19, showed the CCSA data.
